Bali Pass Trek

7 Days

The Bali Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. It’s situated at an elevation of around 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) above sea level. The pass is known for its challenging trekking routes and breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Swargarohini and Banderpooch. It’s a popular destination among trekkers and adventure enthusiasts seeking to experience the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Overview

The trek runs through numerous heritage villages of Har Ki Dun Valley like Osla, Gangaad, Taluka and ascends deep into the Govind National Park, multiple Waterfalls and Ruinsara Lake lie on the way to the pass. It gives panoramic view of the Bandarpunch, Kalanag and Swargarohini peaks.

Temples in Ancient Villages have unique Himachali architecture that keeps you occupied for quite a while. The most surprising part of the trek is meadows of Dev Thach in the middle of Ruinsara Valley. With snow-shrouded Swargarohini peaks in the background and tall trees in the valley make it perfect location for camping. This track follows a narrow stretch through the Ruinsara river. During the springs and summers, after the snow recedes, lots of colourful wildflowers grow here making it a spectacle experience to walk through it.

It is a demanding trek and involves sharp and tiring ridge walks in altitudes above 4000 meters. The descend on the other side is steep and hence requires a well-oriented and experienced trekker

Itinerary

The first day begins with a 9-hour drive from Dehradun to Sankari. We expected to reach Dehradun railway station by 6:30 in the morning. To reach on time, you can book an overnight Bus/Train from Delhi to Dehradun ISBT. After arrival at Sankari, freshening up at the guest house, you will get sufficient time to explore the market close by. Trekking essentials, garments, and equipment are available at the local market in Sankari in case you need last minute shopping for the venture ahead.

We start our drive from Sankari to Taluka which at 12km distance. The trail goes through a dense forest of chestnut, walnut and chinars. The trekking route from Taluka to Seema stays on the right side of supin river, need to cross wooden bridges over streams and do occasional climbs.

Post breakfast; gear yourself up for a long day trekking. Follow the trail on the right, after walking past Seema. Don't take the bridge over Supin River on the left as it leads to Har Ki Dun Valley. After 2 hours climb, the stunning view of the Dev Thatch meadow will come into view. This velvety Thatch meadow is 2 km in length but not much wide. You will enjoy walking on this meadow as the route turns out to be demanding from the end of Dev Thatch meadow to Untigad (3,500 metres.)
After crossing Dev Thatch, traverse to the surging Ruinsara Gad. The forest area of Ruinsara is blessed with nature's munificence so you can enjoy photography here.

Overlooking the magnificent Himalayan peaks, lies the scenic Ruinsara Tai at 3,630 metres. This bejeweled lake is besieged by the birch trees which makes it an ideal campsite.
On reaching the Bali Pass base camp, take a deep breath, let go off the worries and absorb in the serenity of this place. You can also admire a ravishing view of the snow shrouded Swargarohini peaks from here. Walk through the snowy pathways and reach the base camp. If you are fit to traverse further, then trek to the advanced base camp..

Start off early at 4 am so you can reach Bali Pass before the change of weather. Since this the peak of the trek, so you might require carrying the trekking gears such as crampons and ropes. Watch out for crevasses after crossing the advance base camp. The silvery snowfields will take you to the glorious Bali Pass (4,950 metres). Trek towards the Yamunotri side. Make the steep and tricky descent to reach Damini camping ground.

From Damini trek down to the holy Yamunotri side, one of the char dham of Uttarakhand. After paying obeisance at the temple , will trek down to Janki Chatti and then drive to Barkot

Catch early morning bus/cab from Barkot to Dehradun.

FAQs

What are the physical fitness requirements for someone looking to undertake the Bali Pass Trek?

First of all, welcome to the world of trekking!!! You have taken the first step towards the path that will have a positive impact on your life.

Before embarking on any trek, work on your physical stamina. You should be able to do 5km run in 35 mins to be physically fit for any trek. In my opinion, running is only half-baked way of checking trekker’s physical fitness. Running is merely a way to judge trekker’s lung capacity. In addition to strong lungs, trekker needs strong shoulders and back too. To carry heavy backpack for long hours, trekker must strengthen her/his shoulders and back. Some of the exercises that can be done:

Full push-ups or half push-ups (start with 5, slowly increase it to 50 in 4 weeks time).
Neck isometric exercise: Place palm on left temple. Put pressure on palm to push left side towards right but one has to resist the push using right-side neck muscles. Repeat this on right side. This exercise will strengthen area around neck and arm that gets sore because of bag straps. Set of 5 with count of 10 seconds each.
Do weights. (check YouTube for hands and shoulder exercises) Start with 1 kg with 5 rep for each exercise of your choice. Increase to 20–30 reps for each exercise.
Also, if you are unsure whether you will be able to carry the load, offload it for the first trek. Experience it and next time, I am sure that you would want to give yourself a challenge of surpassing your own capabilities.
