Sankari is a 300 year old valley with a diverse lineage across the globe including Persians and Greek ancestors. The village of 120 families has a larger fragment engaged in agriculture and tourism activities. Sankari is nestled at the foothills of western Himalaya’s Range. It is not just a scenic hamlet situated in Uttarkashi district but also a trekker’s delight. The Sankari Village is the last road head to the Govind Balabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary. The village offers ecstatic views of the Himalayan skyline and a plethora of mountain peaks, gazing at you from a distance. Greenery and forests, mountains, snow clad peaks, wildlife, meandering rivers and wide valleys, alpine lake and waterfalls – the area has all in place. Local Culture and Cuisine: Here you can come across the lifestyle of people living in the mountains and a chance to explore their traditional values and their local culture. This is the herbal tea which is very different from ordinary milk tea. Women of the house collect these herbs from the jungle. Market: Sankari has a famous mini market where you will get traditional and delicious food, it always remains busy because of trekkers. Besides, it is also a popular destination for activities like adventure hike, bird watching, village tourism, zip-line, jeep ride, cycling, home stays, yoga and meditation, along with long stay holiday homes which are the conventional occupations of locals.

Someshwar Temple: In Sankari people worship Someshwar Devta; manifestation of Lord Shiva and there is a famous temple of “Someshwar Devta” which is worshiped by the people of more than 60 villages. This place is related to mythology and it is believed that while the Pandvas ascent to heaven Bheem threw a rock and this huge rock is present here which is known as Dhankeshwar Devta.

Zip line: Also known as the Snow Village, Sankari is a popular holiday spot for hikers and keen adventurers. One of the best ways to appreciate the sheer beauty that makes up Sankari is to take a zip-wire ride that allows two people to fly side by side.

Apple Orchards : Apple orchards can be seen here and the trees mostly found here are of Deodar, bamboo, and Buras. This apple themed trail in western Himalayas loops around a small farming village, passing by thousands of apple trees. It’s best to visit either in spring for the apple blossoms (as we did) or in fall for the apples when you can taste the fruit at different farms.

Base camp: It serves as a base camp village for many beautiful treks like Har-ki-Dun, Swargarohini, Bali Pass, Ruinsara, Saru Lamba and Maldaru, Kedartal

Architecture : In the village, you will see alluring wooden houses of the villagers who stay warm in winters and cool in summers and the timber houses and the temples are the silent witness of the changing season for many centuries. The citizens here still follow a green lifestyle. They use electricity generated from the run-off water from the mountains.

Homestay: and Local farming : In recent years, the hike in tourism has given them exposure to the outer world. Locals serve the guests with warm hospitality. You can either halt in cosy hotels with open balconies where you can feel the magic of glistening night sky or you can stay at these ancestral wooden houses along with local families, where you get the insight of local culture and folklore.
