They were advised to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva to absolve their sins.

The Search for Lord Shiva

The Pandavas set out to find Lord Shiva, who was displeased with them due to the bloodshed and destruction caused during the war. To avoid them, Shiva transformed himself into a bull (Nandi) and took refuge in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas.

The Pandavas continued their search and finally located Shiva. However, Shiva, still in the form of a bull, tried to evade them. Bheema, the strongest of the Pandavas, recognized the bull as Shiva and tried to catch him. In the struggle, the bull’s body parts got scattered in different places. It is believed that Shiva’s hump appeared in Kedarnath, his arms in Tunganath, his navel in Madhyamaheshwar, his head in Rudranath, and his hair in Kalpeshwar. These five places are collectively known as Panch Kedar.
