KEDARTAL : A GLACIAL LAKE, May – Jun & Sep – Oct

The Kedartal Lake is one of the most serene lakes in all of Uttarakhand. It is a glacial lake situated at an altitude of 4,750 M in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas in India,and is the source of Kedar Ganga. According to Hindu mythology kedar ganga is considered to be Shiva’s contribution to Bhagirathi (a source-stream of the Ganges). The lake is nourished by the snowfall and snow from surrounding peaks Mt Thalay Sagar, Mt Meru, Mt Bhrigupanth, Mt Gangotri

Kedartal is at the distance of 17KM from Gangotri, is a popular trekking destination. Starting from Gangotri the route comprises a steep rocky climb along the narrow Kedar Ganga valley en-route to Bhoj kharak which is a Rock face, 8 km away. From there it is 4 km to the next available camping site of Kedar kharak, and a further 5 km to Kedartal. The route passes through scenic Himalayan birch forests which is Betula utilis is a deciduous tree native to the Western Himalayas. The white, paper-like bark was used in ancient times for writing Sanskrit scriptures and texts, and still used as paper for the writing sacred mantras, and when the bark is placed in an amulet it is adorned as protection from adversity.

Kedartal is hazardous due falling rocks in some areas, high altitude and segments of path have steep ascent and requires your stamina and inner strength as this passage is a unique adventure and demand professional guides.
